Red wine
Red wine is a popular alcoholic beverage made from dark-colored grape varieties. These grapes produce a greenish-white juice which gains its rich, red color from the anthocyan pigments present in the grape skin. This pigment is responsible for the varying shades of red, from violet in young wines to brick red in mature wines and brown in older red wines.
In order to extract the desired color and flavor components, much of the red-wine production process involves the careful treatment of the grape skin. Teinturier varieties, a relatively uncommon type of grape, produce red-colored juice naturally.
Red wine is enjoyed worldwide and is known for its complex flavors and aromas. It is often paired with rich, hearty meals and is said to have health benefits when consumed in moderation.
